Sadly, I forgot my camera in January, but I remembered this month, and I was rewarded.

We also had some great instruction on the block of the month:

And this Arrowhead block:

I couldn't believe how easy this was to stitch and cut into all the pieces. You sew the two 8" blocks right sides together according to the diagram, and then you cut as you can see on the design board. Then piece your block, and trim it to a 9" block. Amazing, and super minimal waste!

Dear DeAnna, i.e. perhaps the sole reader of this blog, I apologize for slacking off for the entire year after the birth of my son in March. I apparently forgot my camera in May. But I have uploaded all of the pictures for all of the show and tells I shot (April, June, July, and this month), and you may now view them

I did not crop them or pretty them in any way. I just sized them for the web and uploaded them, because I have three children now, and apparently that may just be too many this year.

Hello everyone. We had a great meeting this month, with Eve teaching about circular patterns, sewing a y-seam, and a few other fun techniques.

I am sorry I missed February, because I was deathly ill and couldn't make it to the meeting. You know I am very, VERY sick indeed if I can't make it to Quilt Guild.

I was lucky to make it this month, because my baby was due on the day of quilt guild. Sadly, I am STILL pregnant, four days after my due date. I guess it's not sad for the readers, because I am keeping myself busy by posting more quickly than usual!

I have started uploading the photos at full resolution, so if you want a copy of a photo of your quilt, you can now download a printable size.

Next month Virginia will be teaching us how to make the lovely baskets she makes with small strips of fabric wrapped around cotton clothesline. If you want to make one, bring a clothesline, some strips, and a machine that can do a zig-zag stitch.

I was the president last year, and this year I hope to have a little break. The new president this year will be Anne Beddo, so I am excited to see what she has in store for us.

Eve did two of the blocks for Breast Cancer Awareness, the Susan G. Komen Foundation fundraiser.

Judith volunteered to do the long arm quilting on several quilts for injured soldiers. They turned out really nice.

I am behind, so I have several months to put up. For August we only had the five items above.

This was one of those quilts that make it frustrating to give them away because it turned out so cute. I wanted to steal it for my daughter, who would have just died of happiness over it.
The next three are from a series of Skinnies that is also a class at our local store this year. Sadly, it filled super fast.

Blooming nine patch in green. Fun use of monochromatic approach!

This was a class at the quilt cottage every month last year. Such a cute series.
Another block of the month. Love the reproduction fabrics and the beautiful scalloped edges.

A great pattern for those fabrics you just can't bear to cut up because they are too fabulous.

Janey's Poinsetta. Incredible border!
Judith came up with this quilting pattern while experimenting on her new long arm machine, lucky girl!
We did a half-square triangle exchange last year, and Sariah got a lot of Halloween ones, so she put this together from them. Love the zig zag!
Sariah did this as a round robin project from the Ruby's Inn Quilt Retreat in February. I wanted to go to that but missed the sign-up somehow. Looks beautiful!

This was the first one Ruth had shown at quilt guild. The photo above is the front, and below is the back, which she also pieced.

This is a block of squares Anne threw together for our charity quilting that night.

Deanna made this cute baby quilt. You glue the squares down and then quilt over the top of them. It sews up really fast and is just adorable.

Sariah did this black and colored one from our half square triangle exchange last fall.

Eve did this one for charity out of leftovers.

This pattern is called a braid, and I just loved all of the orange hues.

Sariah's daughter is on an LDS mission in Detroit and sent her two antique quilts that match. They are hand pieced log cabins. They do not have batting, so we think they were either summer quilts or toppers. I think they might have been Christmas toppers, because I've seen quilts that color before, and the brown is what the green faded to over time. But I have no real expertise on the matter.

Dear Guild Members,

August is here and that means a busy time for us quilters with the Washington County Fair, Western Legends Days, and Peach Days. Lynette Bingham would like your challenge quilts turned in at the shop or at the August 13^th meeting. She should have the raffle tickets for the opportunity quilt and signup sheets at the meeting. Everyone should sign up for something to help make the show a success and lighten the load on Lynette.

Carol Sullivan and Wanda Maulhardt will take and return quilts for the Western Legends show in Kanab held August 27-29^th. You can bring the quilts to the August 13^th meeting or the Quilt Cottage before Sat. August 22^nd. The quilts will be returned to the Cottage on Monday the 31st.

I want to encourage you all to participate and show off your quilts at these events. People really enjoy seeing them and let’s face it, usually only the LUCKY PEOPLE that we give our quilts to really get to see them close up. So share your talents at as many places as you can!!

Our August 13^th meeting will be First and Last Quilts and the importance of labeling our quilts. Be sure and bring in your “ Early Treasures and Last Masterpieces”. See you on the 13^th. Eve Greco

I just thought I would mention that if anyone is looking for fabric to finish a project try:

LS Boudreau Quilt Fabrics email: lsboudreaufabric AT eastlink.ca

They located some fabric for me that I was unable to locate on the computer or at any stores on my own. All you need to do is scan a piece of the fabric and do a little description.

They have over 300 sources they use to find the fabric you are looking for. Worked for me!

Also I gave the Main Street Quilt Cottage the pattern I made up to make the little children's bags that use the chalk fabric. Remember? the ones I showed at July meeting.

Dear Guild Members,

This is a reminder notice that Janey Argyle has reserved her clubhouse for a Spiral Table topper workshop on Sat. July 11, from 10-5 pm. This is the Sat. following our regular Thursday meeting on July 9 (Pot Luck and Auction at this meeting). If you plan to come to the workshop on Sat. please respond to Eve Greco by email or phone so we have an idea how many are attending.

Janey does NOT want to tie up the club house for just a few people. You can work on your own project or charity items if you wish. If you need help stitching your tote bag around the top, I will have my big machine and can help you. The clubhouse is a great place with plenty of space and good light and we will have lots of time for sewing and can make a FOOD RUN if that's what people want to do.

There will be some basic directions for the Spiral table topper in the newsletter but I suggest that you try to pick up a pattern for yourself or to share with your buddy. Don't wait till the last minute because the store might be out of patterns. I have the spiral ruler but you might think of investing in one to share with a friend also. So please get back to me on this, Do Not Wait till the meeting on July 9 as that is too late as far as Janey's reservation is concerned. We will be doing a final count at the meeting, more people are fine, as there is room, we don't want just 3-4 people.

This week's meeting details

Our next meeting is Thurs. May 14. It is our Charity Workshop program, so bring your machine and basic sewing kit. We will be working on self-binding baby blankets, mastectomy pillows, and diaper wraps.

If you have flannel, muslin, or some fat quarters (just enough to make a pillow case for the mastectomy pillow) please bring what you have to class. Also any extra batting and or fiber fill for the pillows. Eve has made 9 baby blanket kits with directions. These kits are $3 each payable to Eileen Spencer, as she donated the flannel. This is a bargain as there are about 2 yards of flannel in each kit!

We are looking for an idea for August meeting, so put on your thinking caps and bring your suggestions! The Apple Valley Girls are doing the food this month. Hope you are all working on your mystery project and block of the month. See you on the 14th. Eve Greco & Anne Beddo

These make a 4" by 8" finished (or 4-1/2 by 8-1/2 unfinished) block.

This was from a class Marjorie did over at the Quilt Cottage.

Green swirls that are zig-zag stitched around every edge.

Blanche sports one of the golden dahlia blocks that she can't stop making.

Marilyn (sp?) Shumway embroidered all of these lovely floral blocks and will give it to her granddaughter. The rest of the grandchildren will get quilting lessons.

Chenille Workshop = Materials were handed out in Feburary.

Please bring your supplies as listed. Marjorie will bring extra batting, fabric and other fill in items. She will take us to the point of sewing, so if you do not bring your machine to class you can sew and cut the last 2 steps of your potholders at home. We will stack,mark and have it ready to take home at this point. Be sure to use your walking foot to sew the Chenille. Bring some pins too.

Please bring back the instructions , if you took one, for " Thread Catcher"!!!! Evelyn will appreciate them!!! Time will be limited, busy and fun with 2 workshops going on. So come and enjoy our time together!!

The Main Street Quilt Cottage

The Main Street Quilt Cottage will be having an open house Friday and Saturday December 12th and 13th, so head on over to see the class schedule, make and takes, and some goodies.

Also, the Festival of Trees will not be needing our help this year, so perhaps next year. I believe it occurs the first weekend of December if you are interested in attending.

Adapted Ranger Cookie Recipe

I adapted this recipe from the Better Homes and Gardens cookbook, doubling it and using chocolate chips. Few cookie recipes are really any good without chocolate if you ask me. It makes a lot of cookies, so it's good to take to things such as, oh, say, Quilt Guild meetings.

You can get Craisins for a pretty good price at Costco, and here in Hurricane they sell the flaky coconut at Pioneer Nutrition by the pound for a great price. But don't go buy it, because I need them to keep it in stock for me.

Ingredients
1 cup butter*
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup flaked coconut
1 cup craisins
1 cup (or two or three, or until the dough just barely holds them together) chocolate chips

Directions 1. In a medium mixing bowl beat butter with an electric mixer for 30 seconds. Add granulated sugar, brown sugar, baking powder, and baking soda; beat until combined. Beat in the egg and vanilla. Beat in as much of the flour as you can with the mixer. Using a wooden spoon, stir in any remaining flour. Stir in oats, coconut, craisins, and chocolate chips.

2. Drop dough by rounded teaspoons 2 inches apart onto an ungreased cookie sheet.

3. Bake in a 375 degree F oven about 8 minutes or until edges are golden brown. Cool on cookie sheet for 1 minute. Transfer to a wire rack; cool.

*If you substitute anything but butter, these cookies just won't be same. You can do it if you want to, but consider yourself warned.

This is the Lone Ranger Star quilt she made for a challenge with "Tonto" on the back. (That's the Lone Ranger's other horse.)

Block of the Month- Longer projects you work on and get to keep or shorter ones for a couple months that you finish up on your own? Projects that end with a workshop to finish? How many workshops would you like to set up for this next year?

What kind of demo’s or projects would the members like to learn about this year? Do you want to have some quilting tip classes such as mitered corners and borders? How to bind your quilt on your machine by stitch in the ditch method? Would you enjoy more guest speakers from outside of our guild?

As your incoming President for next year, I want to please our membership with programs and lectures that will be informative and “FUN”. The board and I need your feed back on this. If you have any ideas that you would like to have a program on or see addressed, PLEASE don’t be shy, speak up! I will take a survey at the Nov. Meeting, so NO ONE LEAVES without handing ME their survey. We will have something easy for the Jan. meeting as most of us are tired after the Holidays. Please be giving this some thought over this next month.

From left to right we have pictured The Princess and the Pea, Snow White, The Quilt Police, and The Apple from the Evil Queen. Not pictured was the Ladybug quilt which naughty Lynette refused to display.

Why is it that ironing is so much more pleasant when one is quilting?

We had fun at Janey's clubhouse last Saturday quilting away. The first picture is of one of the tops we finished, and in the bottom picture, Carol is working on the other top we finished. Some of the others worked on individual projects as well, and we all had a lovely time, especially with Carol's chocolate birthday cake and donuts. Yum! Hope the rest of her birthday was fun.

Color Confidence will be presented by Janey Argyle.

WORKSHOP = SEPT. 13TH, Janey Argyle has reserved the Clubhouse at 1240 East Telegraph, Washington, Ut.. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. is the time.

Bring your machine, rulers, etc. We can work together on several items, ie: Christmas Block of the Month, Charity quilts, etc. or bring something that you might be working on. Bring : Your own lunch and drink.

Directions to clubhouse: Turn South at Ridgepointe Subdivision, go approx 2 blocks, turn left on the 1st left street, Clubhouse will be by the mail boxes.

The 13th , is also this years presidents birthday !!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY AND THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO FOR THE GUILD !!!

Can Blanche Young pick colors or what!

This log cabin watermelon was a block of the month last year. I think it turned out so lovely.

The heavily embroidered quilt above won some serious love at the county fair, and its lovely creator also made the pumpkin below.

I really liked the colors in this sampler.

Western Legends Days in Kanab is August 21-23rd. They would like to have quilts from Zion Piecemakers Guild to display. Please bring your quilts to our meeting this Thursday. Wanda will pick them up and deliver them to Kanab and get them back to you after the 23rd of this month. All submissions must have owners name, address, phone number, quilt size,color, and how it was quilted (hand or machine quilted).

Fair and Fabulous Fabric

So I was meandering around through various people's links and found this post about some fantastic fabric. Check it out if you love loud colors and florals.

I'd also like to give my compliments to the ladies whose quilts I saw at the county fair. You know who you are. There was a particularly lovely rendering of Snow White that I suspect we will be seeing at Peach Days. Well done one and all.

More Show and Tell

We had a delightful time at our potluck/auction this month. I don't know about everyone else, but I came home with a large quantity of stuff that will gather more dust in my stash space than I care to admit. It just seemed at the time that I needed it. What can a girl do?

I brilliantly forgot to bring my camera, so I am awaiting some images. I looked through the ones from last month, though, and found the following lovely two quilts that I missed in the last show and tell post.

A lovely blooming nine patch, which the photo is a little blurry, but you still get the effect.
This is a fantastic eagle quilt with a beautiful nature scene. We have such talented ladies in our guild!

Featherweights

During Peach Days this year we will be having a display of Singer Featherweight machines. Featherweights are a style of Singer that was made for portability and ease of repair for the user. You can learn more about these machines here. This is a picture of Sariah's machine, which she brought to our meeting last month.

Charity Quilts

For tonight's meeting we made charity quilts out of orphan blocks and donated fabric. We put together some pinks and blues to make the following nine patches:

Then Janey showed us that you can simply measure your nine-patch, cut it in half vertically and horizontally, and you get the following varied squares that can make something similar to a yellow brick road quilt. I think this would be fun to experiment with lots of different colors!
